Silly Billy’s Toy Shop is Twenty Years Old Today

Bill Deakin founded Silly Billy’s Toy Shop as an Independent Toy Shop Twenty Years ago in Hebden Bridge, West Yorkshire.
Despite a great deal of significant change in UK Toy Retail and several floods in Hebden Bridge, Silly Billy’s has managed to stay afloat.

This is no mean feat when you consider that twenty years ago there were far more Independent Toy Shops around and now sadly many have closed down or been amalgamated into the ToyMaster Group.  Silly Billy’s is still trading after 20 years because of both it’s location and also it’s tenacity. To find out more about what was popular in the Toy Trade twenty years ago then read this article.

Some of the Top Toys of 1997 were the TeleTubbies, Tamagotchi and Buzz Lightyear. Most of which Silly Billy’s Toy Shop have never stocked! We have seen trends and crazes come and go in the last twenty years and the latest Fidget Spinners craze is really turning the tables. Hebden Bridge is an anomaly in the general Toy industry in that popular Toys UK wide can often flop in Hebden Bridge and Bill has learnt many lessons over the past two decades as to what will, and will not, be successful.
Silly Billy’s has faced many challenges over the years and Bill has hung on through thick and thin, the Floods of Boxing Day 2015 almost seeing the business close and without the help of many local people and CFFC we may well have done just that. However, Silly Billy’s managed to continue trading and even relocate to brand new premises in Hebden Bridge.

Bill is not having a Twentieth Birthday party at the shop though he does say that he will have one for the Silver Anniversary of Silly Billy’s in 2022.
We would like to thank all our customers for their continued support, without which we would have closed down, like so many of the other Independent Toy Shops in the UK.

We are happy to be trading from our new location of Old Gate House next door to the Amazing Homely at Hebden, a great shop for Annie Sloan chalkpaint supplies or home furnishings and inspirational ideas. Did you know that they also run Courses on how best to use Chalk Paint?

If you would like to give us anything on our 20th Birthday then all we ask is that perhaps you take the time to review us on Facebook or follow one of our Social Media Profiles:

So what can we say about the last year.

It has been great, we are reaally enjoying our new location and new Toy Shop, it is similar in size to the old shop and we have changed some of our product ranges and brought in some new and exciting products like Jamie Raven’s Magic Sets and Ballon Bijoux Jewellery.
We still have all the major lines that we carried at our old location and we find that our top sellers are still Lego, Playmobil, Sylvanians and TY; with Orchard Toys and Schleich bringing up the rear. We have introduced a range of bath toys and we have done our best to vary our stock over the past year and have some exciting new products like Fidget Spinners.

As we have some outdoor space at our new shop we have a regularly changing human-size Playmobil figure, presently a Knight that we have named Arthur. We have also put our footballs (£4.66 / £2.50), fishing nets (£1), umbrellas (£3.99), hula-hoops (£1.99) and windmills (£1) outside, giving us more room to stock the inside of the shop with all our exciting new and innovative products.
